The phrase "If you can believe it, you can achieve it" is a motivational quote that has been attributed to many different people over the years, including Napoleon Hill, Zig Ziglar, and William Arthur Ward. The exact origin of the quote is unclear but what has become much clearer is the neuroscience that backs this quote up.
From a neuroscience perspective, limiting mindsets can be seen as patterns of thinking that gradually become ingrained in the brain, leading to a self-perpetuating cycle of negative thoughts and beliefs. Our brains have the ability to change and adapt throughout life through neuroplasticity. However, when individuals persistently engage in negative thinking patterns, such as self-doubt or self-criticism, the brain starts forming neural pathways that reinforce those negative beliefs.
For instance, if someone constantly thinks "I am not good enough" or "I can't do this," the brain creates neural pathways that support these beliefs. Over time, these neural pathways become stronger and more automatic, making it increasingly difficult for the individual to think differently or challenge their negative beliefs. In this way, limiting mindsets are formed and sustained.
Limiting mindsets can also be influenced by the amygdala, a part of the brain responsible for processing emotions and detecting potential threats. When individuals encounter situations that trigger feelings of fear or anxiety, the amygdala can become activated, leading to a heightened state of alertness and a tendency to focus on negative outcomes.
Overall, limiting mindsets are a combination of negative thinking patterns that become deeply ingrained in the brain over time, reinforced by the formation of neural pathways and influenced by the brain's response to emotions and potential threats. However, the brain has the potential to change and overcome limiting mindsets through intentional effort and practice.
As a neuro coach (qualifications include: Certified Hypnotherapist, Rapid Transformational Therapist, Neurofeedback Specialist, Master Neuro Change Practitioner, Executive Coach, and Fellow at the Institute of Organizational Neuroscience) I can help explain the science behind these limiting beliefs and suggest positive interventions and the use of various tools and techniques to create a growth mindset. By doing so, I can help individuals to rewire their brain and create a new "life operating system" that enables them to reach their full potential.
